Garden of Excellence

Camellietum Compitese is the most visited camellia garden in Italy. Member of the International Camelia Society, in 2016 has been assigned the title of Garden of Excellence, award that only a very few green areas all over the world have. Numerous requirements are needed in order to get this nomination, some are compulsory, others facultative. Among the compulsory ones there are the regular opening to the public, a collection of at least 200 named cultivars, the presence of a register with all the camellias and their position, the presence of a sign for the known ones, a system for the public to access all the information, the subscription to the International Camellia Society, the possibility to consult the International Register of camellias at any time for visitors’ consultation. Among the non-compulsory characteristics, but still desirable, you can find programs for research on camellia culture, shows or displays during flowering periods, demonstrations of good cultivating techniques, a collection of literary book about camellias, the possibility to purchase some hosted cultivars. Every years thousands of people visit the Camellietum, coming from various places in Italy but also from European countries, mostly from Germany and Austria, especially during Mostra Antiche Camelie della Lucchesia (Antique Camellias of Lucchesia Exhibit) which takes place on the first 3 weekends of March, at Pieve di Compito and Sant’Andrea di Compito. It has now become a tradition, even if it is always capable of renovating itself and attracting more and more visitors in the most picturesque villages in Capannori. The Camellietum, in addition to  be a destination for all camellia lovers and a centre for study and research for Universities and potentially interested botanists, this park is also ideal, as already seen many times, for hosting musical and theatrical moments, conventions and press conferences in a exceptional location.
